About the event
A definitive cultural marker of Appalachia is our rich history of Quilting. Cross cultural and political in nature, quilts have been a marker of resistance and story telling for hundreds of years in our region. The subversive nature and domestic craftsmanship make them the perfect container for protest.
Fiber is also an accessible form of art, quilts often crafted out of necessity while also purveying shared experience and tradition in a community. Paper quilting provides a beginner’s entry into the world of quilting and storytelling.
Led by fiber and quilt-obsessed artist Grace Haley, participants will learn a brief history of resistance quilts in Appalachia, then work together to create small narrative collages based on historical quilt block patterns, that express our shared dreams for our world.
